In July 2002 the SGF took on the coordination of the EU research project “Pure Juice”. In this project nine partner laboratories and research institutes from six European countries developped advanced analysis methods for proof of authenticity and adulteration of fruit juice beverages within three years.

During the total currency of the project SGF provides the project participants with 1200 authentic samples from 34 countries worldwide.

Objectives:

With the newly designed methods, SGF and its partner laboratories are given even more efficient and precise analysis methods for the detection of possible quality problems and competitive distortions which can then be detected and stopped faster.

Principle research objectives:

  • Verification of undeclared addition of acidifying substances
  • Verification of undeclared sugar addition
  • Verification of undeclared addition of ascorbic acid
  • Determination of country of origin
  • Verification of use of not permitted technologies in pineapple juice production
  • Verification of undeclared addition of other fruit types

Participants beside SGF:

  • Central Science Laboratory, UK
  • Eurofins Scientific Analytics, France
  • GfL Gesellschaft für Lebensmittelforschung, Germany
  • Isolab GmbH, Germany
  • Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige, Italy
  • Ministerio de Angricultura Pesca y Alimentacion, Spain
  • Reading Scientific Services Ltd, UK
  • University of Gent, Belgium

Financial Support:

The project could be totally financed by EU fundings.

The project could be finalised at the end of 2005. In cooperation with confructa medien a booklet has been published which is available via the SGF office.
